Fiber
Alpaca fiber is used for making knitted, woven and felted items. It is also used in many cottage industry art and crafts. Although it is similar to sheep wool it is generally much softer, warmer and has no lanolin, which makes it easier to work with, makes it hypo-allergenic and doesn’t “itch” like wool. This fiber comes in 22 recognized natural colors in the United States.
Alpacas are sheared once a year and produce between 5 to 10 pounds of fiber each. This fiber has many uses including hats, scarves, mittens, clothing, and blankets. It is also popular for spinning and needle felting and wet felting.
